Madainn Mhath Cornwall!

Our S1 fluent Gaelic speakers had a video conference with Cornwall this morning.  They taught Year 7 of the Hayle Community College some introductory phrases in Gaelic and as it was St Andrew’s Day we also had a bit of music with some chanter playing and Gaelic song.

It’s quite surreal when people are sitting quietly at the other end, but they were all impressed when they started to repeat the phrases and applaud the pipes and songs.  The return event happens in January when the Cornish pupils will teach a Cornish lesson to our S1.

Chez le médecin with S2

Having finally managed to upload our sound files, S2 spent today listening to themselves and commenting on how they felt they had done.  However as well as listening to themselves they also listened to S2 in Grantown - unfortunately after a couple of pupils commented the system decided to deny us access to the Grantown comments, maybe too many of us posting at once?  However Grantown were able to comment on ours and I’ve never had a post with so many comments before…

Sounds Again!

Posted on November 22nd, 2006 in Uncategorized by lynnehorn

After having problems uploading mp3 files last week I decided to join the rest of the Language community over at typepad. Our new Tobermory French blog can be found at http://mfle.typepad.com/tobermoryfrench

I recorded S2 yesterday and their conversations are there now - they are going to listen to them tomorrow. As well as listening to their own, S2 will listen to S2 from Grantown Grammar School (http://mfle.typepad.com/ggs), and do “2 stars and a wish” for them - they’ll then do the same for us.

Mastering Spellmaster

Now that our school website (www.tobermory.argyll-bute.sch.uk)

is live, we’re looking at putting some language content onto our language pages.  www.spellmaster.com allows you to download a programme with which you can create your own games - all you have to do is type in your own words and it does the rest.

It sounds simple and it is really.  Only taken me two days to work it out along with the help of Jeff and Catherine, our technician and librarian in school.

So hopefully by tomorrow you can go to our pages on the school website and improve your French and Gaelic.

S1 and MP3s (part 2)

Posted on November 3rd, 2006 in Uncategorized by lynnehorn

Finally managed to upload the files to our blog.  Edublogs seems to have gone through a bit of a reshuffle and it took me a wee while to work out how to upload them, however most are now there.  Some came up with an Access Denied message and I’m still not sure why as they didn’t seem to be any bigger in size than some that had uploaded, so I’ve brought them home to try again.

You can hear them on our class blog at

S1 get into MP3s

Posted on November 1st, 2006 in Uncategorized by lynnehorn

S1 took to recording themselves on our mp3 recorders today.  I am impressed by how easy it, when I think back to coombers and microphones, losing the place on the tape.  With the recorders they can just pass it on when they’ve finished and we can delete any files which went wrong.

We rerecorded all today as some of our first attempts wouldn’t upload (no idea why).  It also gave a chance to record again without the whispered,

“Is it on?”,

“Yes, I think so”,

“Are you sure,?”

As the recorders pick up most sounds around the room and 25 pupils practising is noisy, most went into the corridor, one little duo favoured the photocopying room and some wandered outside.  One pair obviously thought that they would need to shout to be heard by the recorder as we could hear their conversation back in class over the sounds from in the room - they turned out to be at the other end of the corridor.

As soon as we manage to upload our rerecordings from today, you can have a listen!
